Fiji stride towards gold in rugby 7s

Fiji is unsurprisingly shaping as gold medal favourites in the men’s rugby 7s competition at the Samoa 2019 XVI Pacific Games, and they could also pick up top honours in the women’s event.

The Fijian men enjoyed comfortable victories over Wallis and Futuna, New Caledonia and Cook Islands in Friday’s day one pool matches at Marist Stadium.

Hosts Samoa comfortably beat American Samoa and Solomon Islands, but could only manage a 12-all draw with Tonga in the final match of the day, which could prove crucial.

A rather one-sided women’s competition saw Fiji, Australia, Papua New Guinea and Samoa dominate, with Solomon Islands and American Samoa on the receiving end of some huge scorelines.

The women’s gold medal clash looks likely to be a rematch of the Port Moresby 2015 XV Pacific Games decider, Fiji v Australia, which was won by Fiji last time.

The action continues at Marist Stadium on Saturday. Entry is $10 for adults and $5 for children and non-rugby 7s athletes. Semi-finals begin at 1pm and medal matches begin at 4pm.
