Sports preparations shift up a gear

Preparations are well underway to refine the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games Sports Schedule. The PGO Sports Services and Operations Team, together with the National Sports Federations have been hard at work to prepare for the 27 competitions that feature as part of the Games. Here is a wrap of progress to date.

Sports Competition Managers Recruited

A key milestone was achieved late last year with the identification of the Sports Competition Managers (SCMs) who will play a critical role in the lead up to, and running of the 27 sports competitions. This result is due to the collaborative partnership forged between the Pacific Games Office Sports Services and Operations Team and National Sports Federations. A positive outcome has been that the majority of the SCM, are locally based, keeping with the overall intent of the Games to build the capability and capacity of the Host Country.

Technical Delegates visit Samoa

Ensuring competitions comply with international standards is the role filled by Technical Delegates from their given International Sports Federations. A number of Technical Delegates have arrived over the past nine months to carry out their inspections surveying sports venues and meet with the representatives from the National Federation. Some Technical Delegates have maximised their stay in Samoa by conducted training for officials.

Test Events Planned

Test events are also in the pipeline with Technical Delegates looking to provide assistance where needed. Many of the sports expect to complete test events prior to the games to improve sport and service delivery.  Sailing, Basketball and Triathlon have successfully completed their test events in the last two months of 2018.

Sports Volunteers needed

Over the course of the coming weeks, SCMs will meet together with the PGO Sports Services and Operations Team to maintain momentum. A key focus for the SCMs has been to recruit a team of volunteers that will support their work come games time. A great opportunity for members of the public wanting to be a sports volunteer.
