Sport preview: Rugby 7s

Rugby 7s kicks off on Friday 12 July in what is surely one of the most keenly anticipated tournaments of the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games.

The venue for the two days of action is the picturesque and spectator-friendly, Marist St Joseph's Stadium in Lotopa, also home to Touch Rugby, next week.

Rugby has a rich history in the Pacific Islands with world class players and teams. The sport has featured in 15 previous Games, initially in the 15-a-side format. Sevens was first adopted in 1999, with Women's 7s introduced in 2011.

Sports Services Manager Taupau, Alex Mikaele said: “Rugby 7s at the Pacific Games is set to be an exciting competition following the success of Pacific teams internationally in recent time. We are pleased to be welcoming such high-calibre teams to Samoa."

Twelve nations will compete in Rugby 7s - American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, Nauru, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tonga Tuvalu and Wallis and Futuna.

The tournament kicks off at 8.00 am on 12 July with Fiji v Solomon Islands in the women’s competition.

Women’s competition
For the women’s competition, teams are placed in two pools of four teams. Within each pool, all teams play each other (three matches per team).

Quarterfinals will be played after pool matches. The winners of the quarterfinal matches proceed to the semi-final matches. The winners of the semi-final matches proceed to the Gold medal match and the losing teams to the Bronze medal match.

Men’s competition
For the men’s competition, teams are placed in two pools of five teams. Within each pool, all teams play each other (four matches per team).

Following the completion of pool round, knock-out rounds will be played. The top teams in each pool proceed to the Gold medal match. The 2nd ranked teams in each pool proceed to the Bronze medal match.

Seeding for the draw was decided on rankings from the 2018/2019 HSBC Sevens Series; rankings from Oceania Sevens Championships; and the 2017 Pacific Mini Games.
