Sport Preview: Lawn Bowls

Lawn bowls at the Samoa 2019 XVI Pacific Games will feature a number of popular stars when competition begins at Lawn Bowls Greens Faleata on Monday 8 July.

Eight nations (Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tokelau and Tonga) will contest eight medals across singles, pairs, triples and fours in both men’s and women’s.

The young Cook Islands men’s pair of Taiki Paniani and Aidan Zittersteijn, who won bronze at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (the country’s first ever Commonwealth Games medal) will be competing at Samoa 2019 in all four men’s events, and gunning for further silverware.

Fiji dominated lawn bowls at the last Pacific Games, winning eight medals (Photo: Games News Service).

Last time at the Port Moresby 2015 XV Pacific Games, Fiji dominated the competition, collecting four gold, two silver and two bronze medals across men’s and women’s events.

Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea and Norfolk Island also collected multiple medals, while Niue enjoyed a single moment on the podium.

Lawn bowls is celebrating 40 years since it first inclusion in the Pacific Games, in 1979.

The competition begins at 9am on Monday at Lawn Bowls Greens Faleata and runs for the first six days of the Games, with free entry.
