Day 6 of the Torch Relay and the joyful celebrations continue

With only six days left before the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games, the torch relay continues to pave the way in preparation for the opening ceremony on Sunday 7 July.

Today, the torch relay started from the village of Aleisa on Upolu. It was sixth leg of the relay and schools did not disappoint with every village having their own way of showing their support.

Before the torch baton made its way to the coastal area, the students staged a performance celebrating Fiji, the country they have adopted as part of the Games’ In-School programme, in front of the crowd gathering to witness the relay.

The event was live-streamed on Facebook and there are more photos from today here.

The engagement of the communities was shown with the strong men of their villages wearing matching colours and awaiting the arrival of the torch to run alongside with a Samoan flag.

Day 6 of the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games Torch Relay - more celebration!

The atmosphere was electric.

There were mothers holding a Bluetooth speaker and dancing, joyfully, as the torch passed by.

The different denominations were ringing their church bells. People were beeping their car horns. Some were glued to their phones making sure they captured every moment of the torch baton travelling through their villages.

The women committees were loud in their support - with decorations of colourful flags alongside the road and coconuts with tinned cans and kerosene which they could light up.

Every village had a different style of cheering for the torch. Some were on the roof of their houses with sticks, drumming and shouting with excitement. In other villages, the locals wore Samoan traditional wear and danced gracefully alongside the road as they patiently waited for the torch baton to arrive.

Students had empowering messages on their posters supporting Samoa and their adopted countries.

The response from the students as they rallied behind the torch has been a fruitful experience for them. Regardless of the distance, they never stopped smiling or chanting cheers as they ran together with the torch.

The relay continues tomorrow with the 7th leg from Sapo'e to Ti'avea.
