Weightlifting was introduced in 1966 and since then has been held at every Pacific Games. Samoa will be the fifteenth Pacific Games weightlifting competition, which doubles as a Commonwealth Championship.
With the success of Samoa weightlifters on the international stage, the popularity of weightlifting in Samoa has soared and is sure to attract a strong following in July.
A total of 20 Pacific nations and territories, including both New Zealand and Australia, have indicated their participation in five days of competition.
Weightlifting will be held at Gymnasium 1 which is located at the Faleata Sports Complex.
Gymnasium 1 is located within the Faleata Sports Complex, nestled between Gymnasium 2 and the Samoa Aquatic Centre. Built for the 2007 Pacific Games, Gym 1 hosted bodybuilding, weightlifting and boxing. Since then the venue has hosted numerous sporting and cultural events such as the Miss Samoa Pageant.
Gym 1 will host three sports for the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games: Judo, Powerlifting and Weightlifting.
